The Sendai Aoba Festival is held every year on the 3rd Sunday, and the previous day, of May. A few thousand people will perform the Sendai Suzume Odori (Sparrow Dance) throughout the center of the city along with members playing the Japanese flute and drums creating a joyous atmosphere. On the eve of the main festival, ‘Sendai Yoi Yamaboko’ festival floats decorated with glowing lanterns parade the avenues. At the main festival on the second day, witness the ‘Jidai Emaki Junko’ procession, a parade of heroic samurai warriors and others dressed in traditional historical clothing and the 11 elaborately decorated ‘Yamaboko’ festival floats traverse around the city.
